"Project Orbis - an eye clinic aboard a DC-8 jet which provides medical treatment for serious eye disorders worldwide is scheduled to visit Jamaica by mid 1982. The announcement was made at Jamaica House on Tuesday. The jet will come to the island under the auspices of the Jamaica-America Medical Assistance Committee [JAMAC] based on the request of JAMAC's patron Mrs. Mitzie Seaga - wife of the Prime Minister. Orbis is a donated refurbished DC-8 jet which has been converted into a flying teaching hospital with surgical facilities including an operating room and a recovery room.
JAMAC is a joint effort of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, the Houston Chamber of Commerce, the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, the Houston Chamber of Commerce in Texas and the Harris County Medical Society of Texas. From left is Dr. David Panton M.D. former chairman of Department of Opthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas; Patron of JAMAC Mrs. Mitzie Seaga [the Prime Minister's wife], Dr. Bruce Richards [chairman of JAMAC] and Health Minister Dr. Kenneth Baugh."
