Title

St. James to Hanover main road

Description

"Preliminary estimates for damage to Parish Council Roads in rural St. James have been set at over $800,000 by Mayor Charles Sinclair. Estimates for roads maintained by the Public Works Department are not yet available but are expected to run into several thousand dollars. And according to Mayor Sinclair, over $150,000 are needed to carry out emergency repairs to roads which are now impassable.

In the picture, taken the morning after the flood, the Reading-Hopewell main road in St. James is seen covered with water and mud, over 24 inches deep in some areas. The station wagon in front was saved from being washed into the sea, less that ten yards away, by the bus which was used to stop it in midstream. Residents of the area have complained that whenever it rains heavily, the road is flooded. They claim that this is caused by the lack of proper drainage in the area."
