Cutting canes
Title
Cutting canes
Description
Weeding the young canes succeeds planting when the cane is about twenty inches in height. Cutting canes, in general, commences in January in which the Negro seizes the cane by the top and cuts off the upper joints to plant for the next crop; he then cuts down the remaining stem close to the ground. Another Negro carries the cane to the cart, which is always in waiting to convey them to the mill.
