Christians gather for mass at The Church of Nativity - Bethlehem

"Mass at the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem. Since the re-establishment of the state of Israel thirty years ago, an extraordinary religious and ethnic diversity has characterised the Holy Land. The population is a veritable mosaic composed of a Jewish majority and a wide range of minority communities like Moslems, Christians and Druze.

The 100,000 or so Christians belong to 35 denominations. The great majority of these are Arabs, but they are considerably out-numbered by the Moslem Arabs. The Christian communities belong to one of four principal groups- the Orthodox, the most ancient, dating from the dawn of Christianity; the non-Chalcedonians, those which split away from Orthodoxy; the Catholics, and of most recent date are the Anglican and Protestant groups.
A number of these flourish within the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem and a focal point of their religious life are the Holy Places where the rights or worship are scrupulously invoked."
