"As far as Port Antonio is concerned this could be soon a scene of the past. The Railway Corporation has closed the Port Antonio line indefinitely since Tuesday. Now the unions are disturbed at the loss of jobs. The NWU sent a telegram to Acting Prime Minister David Coore and to Transport Minister Eric Bell seeking immediate intervention on behalf of the jobless workers and their children. The BITU was also concerned at the fact that the jobs were terminated before arrangements for alternative employment were made. It is held in union circles that there are to be further cutbacks except on lines where the JRC can service the bauxite and alumina industry."
